Rhinoplasty Recovery Week by Week: A Realistic Timeline (2026)

March 18, 2026Op. Dr. Emine Şakalar

What really happens after rhinoplasty? A week-by-week recovery guide for international patients — including when you can fly home, return to work, and resume normal life.

One of the most common questions patients ask before rhinoplasty is not about the surgery itself — it's about what happens after. When can I fly home? When can I go back to work? When will I look normal?

This guide answers those questions honestly, based on typical recovery timelines for primary rhinoplasty. If you're having revision rhinoplasty or a more complex procedure, your surgeon will give you a more specific timeline.

Week 1: Rest and Recovery

The first week is the most demanding, and the most important.

What to expect physically:

  • Splint or cast on the nose (removed at day 5–7)
  • Significant swelling across the nose, cheeks, and under the eyes
  • Bruising, particularly under the eyes — variable but common
  • Breathing through the mouth (internal swelling reduces airflow)
  • Mild to moderate discomfort, managed with prescribed medication
  • What you can do:

  • Light reading, laptop work from a reclined position (from day 3–4 onwards)
  • Short indoor walks — encouraged for circulation
  • Sleep with your head elevated (two pillows minimum)
  • What to avoid:

  • Any physical exertion, bending, or heavy lifting
  • Glasses of any kind (frames press on the healing bone)
  • Smoking, alcohol, blood-thinning medications
  • Hot showers or baths (increases swelling)
  • > Splint removal usually happens at day 5–7. This is an important milestone — your surgeon checks the result and you see your nose properly for the first time. It will still be swollen, but the shape is visible.

Week 2: The First Step Back

After the splint comes off, many patients feel ready to re-engage with the world. The reality is nuanced.

    What to expect physically:

  • Bruising fades significantly — usually coverable with makeup
  • Swelling has reduced by 30–40%, but the nose still looks puffy
  • Sensitivity to touch remains
  • Inside the nose still feels congested
  • What you can do:

  • Return to desk work / office — most patients are comfortable doing this from day 10–14
  • Light outdoor walks, short errands
  • Social settings — having dinner with friends, family visits
  • Gentle skincare around (not on) the nose
  • Still too early for:

  • Crowded, dusty, or smoky environments
  • Intense sun exposure — this can worsen swelling and affect skin pigmentation
  • Any activity with risk of accidental bumps to the face
  • > On flying home: For international patients, most surgeons clear short-haul flights (under 4 hours) from day 7–10, after the splint is removed and the surgeon confirms the result looks stable. For longer flights, most recommend waiting until day 10–14.

Weeks 3–4: Back to Normal Life

By week three, most patients have rejoined their daily routine.

    What to expect physically:

  • 60–70% of swelling has resolved
  • The nose has a recognisable shape — though fine details are still evolving
  • Tenderness is much reduced
  • Most visible bruising is gone
  • What you can do:

  • Full office and professional work
  • Social events, restaurants, meetings
  • Light exercise — walking at pace, gentle cycling
  • Makeup (except directly on the nose — check with your surgeon)
  • Still avoiding:

  • Glasses frames (still too early to rest on the nose)
  • Contact sports or any risk of facial impact
  • Strenuous cardio or weightlifting
  • Week 6: The Green Light for Most Activities

The 6-week mark is a significant milestone in rhinoplasty recovery.

    What's now typically permitted:

  • Low-intensity cardio: swimming (if fully healed), cycling, jogging
  • Yoga and Pilates (excluding face-down positions)
  • Glasses — with your surgeon's approval
  • Short-haul travel including flights
  • Still waiting on:

  • Contact sports, martial arts, team sports — minimum 3–6 months
  • Anything with high risk of facial impact
  • Month 3: Near-Final Result

By three months, roughly 90% of swelling has resolved. The nose looks close to the final result. Most patients feel confident in social and professional situations. Heavy exercise is generally cleared, with your surgeon's approval.

    Month 12–18: Final Result

Rhinoplasty results take 12 to 18 months to fully settle. The nasal tip and fine skin areas are the last to refine. Small changes during this period are completely normal.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When can I fly home after rhinoplasty in Turkey?

For most international patients, short flights are cleared from day 7–10 after splint removal and surgeon sign-off. For flights over 4–5 hours, waiting until day 10–14 is usually recommended.

When can I wear glasses after rhinoplasty?

Framed glasses should be avoided for 6–8 weeks minimum. During this period, contact lenses are the practical alternative, or glasses can be taped to the forehead. Sunglasses follow the same rule.

When will the swelling go down completely?

The majority of visible swelling resolves within 2–3 weeks. Residual swelling — particularly at the nasal tip — continues to reduce through month 3. The final shape emerges between 12 and 18 months.

When can I exercise after rhinoplasty?

Light walking is encouraged from day 3. Moderate cardio from week 6. Contact sports and high-impact activities: not before 3–6 months.

Can I wear makeup after rhinoplasty?

Face makeup (avoiding the nose) can usually resume from day 7–10. Applying makeup directly to the nose — typically to cover bruising — should be discussed with your surgeon, usually from week 3–4.

    Planning Your Trip

If you're travelling from the UK, Germany, France, or elsewhere in Europe, most patients plan a stay of 7–10 days in Turkey:

  • Day 1: Arrival, rest
  • Day 2: Pre-op consultations and tests
  • Day 3: Surgery
  • Days 4–6: Rest and recovery at the hotel
  • Day 7: Splint removal, surgeon check
  • Day 8–10: Clearance to fly home
  • Your coordinator handles the logistics. You only need to book your flight.
